About the AAO

The American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) is a 501c (3) nonprofit membership association focused on supporting osteopathic physicians who specialize in neuromusculoskeletal medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine (NMM/OMM). Academy members consist of osteopathic physicians (DOs), osteopathic medical students and residents, international clinicians, and other healthcare providers. Founded in 1937, the AAO was established to teach, advocate and research the science, art, and philosophy of osteopathic medicine, emphasizing the integration of osteopathic principles, practices, and manipulative treatment in patient care.

About the AAOJ

The AAO Journal (AAOJ), the official journal of the American Academy of Osteopathy, is a peer-reviewed publication focused on disseminating information on the science and art of neuromusculoskeletal medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine (NMM/OMM). It is directed toward osteopathic physicians, students, interns, and residents, and particularly toward physicians with a special interest in osteopathic principles and practice (OPP) and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT).

The AAO Journal offers a medium wherein new and original techniques, procedures and concepts in osteopathy may be presented to the profession along with original, abstracted, or reprinted material aimed at promoting a better understanding of osteopathic principles and their application on diagnosis and treatment of disease. As the official journal of the American Academy of Osteopathy, the AAOJ also publishes policy statements, communications from the Board of Trustees, and notices of important Committee and Special Interest Group projects.
